Arms Long Gallery 1685

Queens' College Cambridge - Long Gallery 1685 - JPEG 32KLong Gallery 1685

This is an enlargement from Loggan's view of 1685, showing the Long Gallery as it then was.

Three octagonal turrets continue up above the roof line, reducing twice, with decorations on top. The outlines of these octagons can still be seen in joints of the floorboards in the attic of the Long Gallery.

The projecting windows carry on above the roof line, making large dormers: two on the front and two on the rear.

It is not known when the Long Gallery structure was simplified to its present form, with the octagonal elements truncated with a flat lead roof.

The old hexagonal staircase can be seen on the rear at the far end - this was replaced by Carter's brick staircase of 1798.
