The Old Chapel now the War Memorial Library

The foundation stone of the College was laid under the original Chapel in Old Court on 15th April 1448. The interior of this building was badly damaged in 1643 during the English Civil War when William Dowsing destroyed pictures and images and dug up the altar steps.
Internal reconstruction took place in 1773 under the direction of James Essex and the Chapel was again remodelled in 1845 and 1853, on the latter occasion the work was the design of the architect G. F. Bodley.
When the new Chapel in Walnut Tree Court was completed in 1891 the Old Chapel building was essentially neglected and simply used as a study annex for many years.
