Glowing Green: Mathematical Bridge Joins Samaritans in Marathon Support

As the 2024 London Marathon approaches, this weekend Queens' College will illuminate the iconic Mathematical Bridge in solidarity with the Cambridge Samaritans, the official charity partner for this year's marathon. The initiative is part of a broader campaign to raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention.

Local landmarks and buildings across the UK and Ireland will bathe in green light over the marathon weekend, showing support for Samaritans and their mission.

The Samaritans seek to use this opportunity to start a national conversation around suicide and tackle the stigma surrounding the topic. Their Believe in Tomorrow campaign aims to let people struggling know they’re not alone.

Over 70 Samaritans branches will be taking over town centres across the UK and Ireland, and more than 600 individuals will participate in the London Marathon and MyWay as part of Team Samaritans on April 21st, aiming to raise £1.7 million to support Samaritans' vital work.

Cambridge Samaritans, which answers over 2000 calls a month, is entirely staffed by volunteers and must raise all operating costs independently. Samaritans provides emotional support to individuals feeling distressed or overwhelmed by life's challenges. Their services are available 24/7 via phone, email, and written correspondence.

Queens' College is delighted to support the Samaritans in sharing such an important message, to remind individuals that support is available and that they are not alone in their struggles. The Mathematical Bridge will be lit on the evenings of Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st April.

For those in need of support, Samaritans can be reached at 116 123 (UK), via email at jo@samaritans.org, or by writing to FREEPOST Samaritans Letters.
