Financial Assistance within Queens'

Listed below are some of the kinds of financial support that the College is able to offer to its members for academic and welfare purposes.  Details of College scholarships, studentships and bursaries may be found on the College website.  The funds listed below are not designed to support activities which are compulsory parts of a taught degree programme – these are supported by Departments or Faculties, (note also that expenses related to ‘Preparing for Patients’ courses and Clinical Medics ‘electives’ are not supported by these Funds).

In considering applications, the College bears in mind (1) whether other funding sources are available and (2) the financial need of the individual applicant.  In order to allocate scarce resources in an equitable manner, the College monitors the record of prior College funding provided to applicants.  Applications for support, together with a brief statement of the project (or the reasons for the request for support) and a financial statement, should be submitted to your Tutor in the first instance.

The Tutorial Assistance Fund. This fund is used to support students in a variety of ways, but its chief uses are for students in unforeseen financial hardship.  Successful applicants receive their grant either as a credit to their College account or in the form of a cheque.

The Jubilee Fund. This is small fund is designed “to support any project or expedition involving initiative and industry which will assist the growth of student’s personality, maturity and understanding of the world”.  Small travel grants are normally made from this fund.  In order to most equitably allocate the limited funds in this account, successful applications will only receive partial support for any given project.

The College Expedition Fund. This small fund is to support “expeditions, the majority of whose members are members of the College, involving travel or study in remote parts of the world”.  Grants from this fund are normally made during the Michaelmas Term.

The Perry Fund. This fund “supports the academic activities of research and graduate students”.  This fund has mainly been used for help with travel to research conferences and the like.  Successful applications have normally been able to demonstrate a clear link between their project and their academic or career-development needs.  Grants from this Fund are normally available only once during a student’s graduate career in College.

The Etough Fund.  This fund is for “needy and deserving scholars of the College”.  The fund is used as a supplement to the Perry Fund to support research activities of research students.  It applies similar criteria to those used for applications for the Perry Fund.

The Weil Fund. This fund makes “grants to American graduate students or to British graduate students to understand each others culture, history, politics etc., particularly to needy graduates and where the publication of an academic book will result”.  This fund is used for research support for a research student’s request for assistance connected with America.

Queens’ Bursaries (Colenutt Fund).  These Bursaries are intended to “top up” postgraduate students who already have major funding, but who are partially self funding.  Applications are normally made prior to coming into residence, but may be made after arrival in cases of exceptional and unexpected financial need.

The Clews Fund. This is a special fund for the relief of distress amongst members of the College.

The Maine Fund. This small fund is for the encouragement of music in the College (not restricted to Music students).  It supports Instrumental Awards programme and makes small grants for other musical activities.  Applications will be considered in the light of the merit of the proposal and financial need.

The Clough Fund. This small fund is intended to support the musical life of the College, especially the Chapel Choir.

The Greta Maxwell Fund. This small fund is intended to promote arts and crafts in the College.  Grants from this fund are small and normally linked to a specific project.  Initial enquiries should be directed to the Secretary of the Creative Arts Committee.

The Q550 Fund. Queens' has limited funds to support those competing in sport at university-level and above.  Every year the college allocates bursaries through the Q550 sports fund to help with the costs of competition and kit.  The allocation takes place on an annual basis in the first half of the Lent term and is advertised through the JCR and MCR mailing lists.  We encourage potential applicants to look at external sources of funding, such as the those listed here (http://www.sport.cam.ac.uk/bursaries-and-scholarships/index.html) as well.  The bursaries are administered by the Senior Treasurer of the College Union (currently Dr Andrew Thompson, act25@cam.ac.uk) and he is happy to deal with any queries.

It is worth noting that there are other sources of financial assistance available to students.  Students are urged to explore these possibilities by consulting their Tutor, consulting the Awards and Prizes issue of the Reporter (usually published in November each year), visiting the College website, or visiting the University website: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/funds/
